Considering a College's Financial Health

Happy New Year! As we near the end of January, here is an article on a topic that is not discussed often enough during the college process. It's important to evaluate a college's financial health before deciding to apply. To reduce costs, colleges may need to eliminate departments, majors and reduce faculty. Other academic programs, as well as extracurricular activities, may be cut or made to run with less financial support. When looking at colleges, consider the overall financial health of a school and whether the programs that you are interested in make a profit for the school.

A rewarding start to this admissions cycle

The college acceptances are rolling in and I could not be more proud! Just this week, two clients who have worked incredibly hard found out that they were admitted to their first choice colleges. Other clients have been admitted to colleges high on their list with generous merit and there is more to come. It's so satisfying to see students reap the reward of their hard work and determination. They make me look good!

students are arriving at college unprepared

This article describes the impact some students have experienced in high school as the result of Covid, and goes further to look at the consequences for those students once in college. Covid unfortunately has made learning a lot harder for students who have learning differences and has delayed the development and mastery of critical skills. I spoke in detail about this in my talk last week to Byram Hills High, and I strongly encourage my clients to think about where their child’s skills are currently and the growth they will need to be successful in college. As a consequence of Covid, when choosing colleges it is now more essential than ever to accurately assess a student’s academic, social and emotional skills when looking for the right fit. A right fit college might look a little different through this lens, yet it is a critical part of determining what kind of environment your child will do well in, as well as the support they might need. Students accurately understanding their skills, and choosing colleges where they feel engaged but are not overwhelmed, can make the difference between being successful at college or not.
