students are arriving at college unprepared

This article describes the impact some students have experienced in high school as the result of Covid, and goes further to look at the consequences for those students once in college. Covid unfortunately has made learning a lot harder for students who have learning differences and has delayed the development and mastery of critical skills. I spoke in detail about this in my talk last week to Byram Hills High, and I strongly encourage my clients to think about where their child’s skills are currently and the growth they will need to be successful in college. As a consequence of Covid, when choosing colleges it is now more essential than ever to accurately assess a student’s academic, social and emotional skills when looking for the right fit. A right fit college might look a little different through this lens, yet it is a critical part of determining what kind of environment your child will do well in, as well as the support they might need. Students accurately understanding their skills, and choosing colleges where they feel engaged but are not overwhelmed, can make the difference between being successful at college or not.
